Liberator of Buchenwald shares `emotionally charged moment` with survivor
Written by Joanne Hill Tuesday, 07 February 2012
TORONTO – Irving Roth was a starving 15-year-old imprisoned at Buchenwald when American Army Combat Engineer Frederick (Rick) Goss Carrier literally blew the locks off the concentration camp’s gate. Roth doesn’t know if he met Carrier on April 11, 1945, the day the camp was liberated by the Americans, but it was “an emotionally charged moment” when the two men shook hands recently at an event hosted by the March of the Living.
“His hand is the one that blew up the lock to Buchenwald,” Roth told the Jewish Tribune in a telephone interview. “Without him, if they had tarried another two or three weeks, I may not be alive.”
This year, a special effort is being made to honor WWII veterans who risked their lives to defeat Nazi tyranny. On Yom Hashoah 2012, concentration camp liberators will join Holocaust survivors and 12,000 students from around the world on the "March of the Living" from Auschwitz to Birkenau.
Excerpts from Rabbi Israel Meir Lau's Recent Book - Out Of The Depths
Out Of The Depths: The Story Of A Child Of
Buchenwald Who Returned
Home At Last
by Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau
with Forewords by Shimon Peres and
Elie Weisel
In his recent book, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau tells
the miraculous story of his rescue from the
Holocaust as a young child, and his subsequent
aliyah to the land of Israel. Arriving as an
eight-year-old orphan refugee in Palestine in
1945, without any parents, and virtually no
formal schooling, Rabbi Lau eventually attains
the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel. Through his eyes and his own moving story, we
also learn about the major events that shaped Israel since the founding of the state in
1948.
The March of the Living figures prominently in the book. As one of Israelâs youngest
Holocaust survivors and most outspoken Orthodox Zionist leaders, Rabbi Lau is
convinced of the value of the March of the Living with regard to strengthening oneâs
commitment to Zionism and Jewish identity.
In his words, âFrom my experience and observation, the Jews who come from
other countries around the world to participate in the March of the Living return
from it with a deeper commitment to Israel, while the Israelis go home more
conscious of their Jewish identity.â

Whitwell Tenessee “Paper Clips” Project Students to Visit Poland With the March of the Living
We are pleased to announce that the March of the Living will be coordinating a trip to Poland for a special group of middle-schoolers from Whitwell, Tennessee. This unique group of students are recognized world-wide by the documentary produced in 2004 entitled “Paper Clips.” The Whitwell Middle School garnered worldwide attention for their Paper Clips Project when they decided, in 1998, to collect paper clips in order to represent the victims of the Holocaust. What started out as a small project eventually grew to an overwhelming collection of over 30 million paper clips and a world-class human tolerance studies program.
A group of current and former students, along with the current and past principals of the school, will be embarking on a once in a lifetime experience as they travel with the March of the Living to Poland. Participants will spend a week in Poland traveling around the country, learning about the history of the Holocaust. They will visit both Warsaw and Krakow, discovering a lost world of rich Jewish heritage which no longer exists. Sites include the remnants of the Jewish ghetto, Mila 18, the Jewish cemetery and the restored Nozyk synagogue in Warsaw, and the Jewish Quarter and Ramah Synagogue in Krakow. They will travel to see the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka and Majdanek. This group will also have the unique opportunity to meet with a select group of Polish youth when they visit a local high school in Warsaw.
The film crew from the original documentary will be joining the group in Poland in order to document the students’ experience as part of a soon to be released documentary sequel.
